Tip ups
« on: December 24, 2013, 03:31:08 PM »
Just curious if they were legal. I've heard mixed answers. I downloaded the regs and searched tip, tip up, and tip-up with no results. The only thing it says is the rod must be in your immediate control. Which seems relative.

I love this state but I swear you need a law degree to hunt and fish :twocents:

Used them quite a bit in New England years ago.  Never saw them used out here...  :dunno:  Best thing to do is give a call to the Game Department.

I have no idea what a tip up is, but if it's not listed in the regulations as being illegal, it's legal! No law degree needed.

I always used them back east too but I don't think they're legal here. There's the 1 rod law and the immediate control law. They're so much fun to use though. I wish...

A tip-up is a cross stick affair with a spring flag that pops up when a fish tugs on the bait and alerts you to a fish on.  We had 4 or 5 of them and put one over each hole, and wore ice skates to get to them faster.  Here all I've ever seen is one fisherman over one hole, holding a short rod, and sitting on a stool or 5-gallon bucket.

So here is my legal opinion...propaganda included. Only one pole is allowed unless you have the two pole endorsement. Nothing is said about tip ups. The pole must be in your immediate control. So one could fish a pole and a single tip up or two poles or two tip ups. As long as all are in your immediate control. So what is immediate control, 10, 20, 30 feet.  I have heard in the past tip ups were specifically excluded. Since they are now not but also not specifically allowed it is a matter of opinion. One which will probably get you a ticket which you could reasonably fight.

Please note I am not a lawyer this is probably propaganda.

Okay, now that I know what it is, I see no reason why it would be illegal.   :dunno:

I posed this same question in a differant way in this topic:

http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,141617.0.html

It was determined that if I had a 2 rod endorsement. I could in fact use both poles and also use my motion decoy on a 3rd rod since it has no hooks.

The definition of under your control. I fish them trolling for kokanee and I have a rod out of the boat on both sides. I am also driving the boat. Do I have them in my hands? Nope I'm running the boat. If I get a hookup can I control the fish? Yep!

Let the Forum Police Loose!!!    :chuckle:

The chances of my using 2 rods in the same 6 inch hole are pretty slim!! But I'm sure I could watch a tip-up from 30 feet away and still have it in my control. Wonder how many folks who bank fish for salmon that use rod holders are just watching the rod waiting for it to bounce.

Good info ridgeratt. Thanks! I like the comment about bringing a kid to play with the decoy. I actually held out on buying the 2 pole endorsement this year because I was just going to bring my son with me. After a few terrible 2 temper tantrums it was just easier to buy the endorsement.

If he is just "2"  that maybe a bit snappy to have him out on the ice unless you have some type of shelter with a bit of heat.

Only tried it on the ice once so far. We usually go in the boat during warmer weather.

He does have much better gear than me though. I my try on a lake close to the house for a short period. It'll just have to be a special trip focused on him. He loves to fish!

Here is an Ice Fishing video that WDFW posted on their Facebook Page today.  They demonstrate using tip ups.

Thanks olsy! You found a definitive answer.  You can use put to two tip ups with a two pole endorsement.
